Americas access control set for expansion

Another market survey by IMS Research suggests that the Americas market for electronic physical access control equipment will reach US$925.1m ( GB pound 470m) in 2011, with a forecast compound annual growth rate of 8.3 per cent.

The report says that one of the key trends driving this growth is the replacement of 125kHz proximity readers with 13.56MHz smart card readers, with the trend set to accelerate over the next two years following the US government mandate HSPD-12.

Analyst Paul Everett said: “In order to comply with HSPD-12, government facilities will need to replace their existing access control credentials with Personal Identity Verification cards. They will also need to replace their card readers with FIPS 201 compliant smart card readers.

“This will lead to tremendous demand for access controls over the next two years as government facilities replace their existing access controls to meet the 27 October 2008 deadline.”

HSPD-12 is a Homeland Security directive for federal government employees and contractors to provide access to both physical and logical resources.
