Control desks boost security at BOC Gases

Part of the Munich-based Linde Group, BOC has a 120-year history of customer service in supplying purified gases for a wide range of industrial and medical applications. The Linde Group operates in some 70 countries, employs 53,000 people and posts annual sales of euro 12.7 billion.

The contract with Custom Consoles encompasses two exceptionally large process control desks in addition to a supervisor’s desk. Installation took place in the third week of November, just two months from the initial order being submitted.

The two desks in detail

Largest of the two control desks is a ten-metre long structure capable of accommodating up to eight operators. The desk is inline for most of its length, curving through 90 degrees at each end. Fourteen Ergotron dual-monitor towers are located along the rear of the desk, each accommodating a pair of LCD display panels positioned one above the other. An additional dual-horizontal and five single-horizontal Ergotron mounts support a further LCD seven screens.

The second process control desk is eight metres in length with a 90 degree corner unit at one end. This is identical in style to the ten metre desk, but has room for up to five operators. No less than 20 LCD monitor screens are mounted to the rear of this desk on two-high Ergotron towers, with a further two screens on individual mounts at the straight end of the desk. The two control desks face outwards in an open U-style formation, with the supervisor’s desk facing the shorter side.

“This could have been a very long and costly project if we’d opted for tailor-made control furniture,” commented client Andy Sugden – energy and technical manager at BOC Gases, Brinsworth – conversation with SMT Online. “Custom Consoles was able to match our requirements exactly by combining standard components from its Module-R series. The build quality, both of the desks and of the display screen supports, is very high and the appearance is well in keeping with modern styling.”

Pick-and-mix Control Room furniture

Speaking on behalf of Custom Consoles, Gary Fuller – the company’s sales manager – explained: “Our 12 years of experience in supplying broadcast-grade technical furniture has proved useful in the process control world, which is making ever greater use of computers and related electronic equipment. The Module-R series enables us to produce high quality furniture at accessible prices and with much shorter delivery times than would otherwise be possible in the world of one-off designs.”

Custom Consoles’ Module-R product range is a pick-and-mix Control Room furniture system combining aesthetically pleasing style with high durability. It enables robust, efficient and attractive Control Room desks to be produced to meet specific needs from a selection of high-quality pods, base sections, 19-inch rack housings, worktops, end-panel modules and legs.

The desk pods are available as single-bay sections with up to ten U-style chassis capacity. Cabinet construction is in high-quality veneered MDF.

Other features include continuous brush-strip cable access to front worktops. Recent additions to the range include new 19-inch rear-desk equipment pods, new front-access panels with increased ventilation and optional hardwood worktop buffers.
