Growing demand leads to UK’s first degree course in biometrics

In direct response, the Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen has launched an MSc in Intelligent Biometric Security Systems – the first course of its type in the UK and one which is aiming to bridge the gap between supply and demand of skilled personnel.

Commenting on the new degree course, Dr Ann Reddipogu of the Robert Gordon University’s School of Engineering, told SMT: “Identifying humans using biometrics is particularly attractive to businesses involved in security. Whereas physical items such as security cards and keys may be lost or stolen, the biometric identifier is unique to each individual.”

Graduates from the course are expected to be in high demand, with many sectors of industry looking for individuals with experience of intelligent systems, biometrics, video communications, computer network security and forensic analysis. Those sectors include law enforcement, the military, Government, financial services, healthcare, telecommunications, retail and transport.

Students will also work in industry as part of their studies.
