Yorkshire-based Adam Electronic Security Systems has installed a CCTV system for Jacuzzi UK, which is being used to monitor the loading of trucks and ensure security around its main warehouse, which forms the headquarters for the company, and the nearby manufacturing plant. The outcome has been significant cost savings and improvements to processes.
Jacuzzi UK is one of the largest bathroom and spa manufacturers in the UK today. The company wanted a CCTV system for two purposes. Firstly, they wanted to be able to monitor the perimeter of the main warehouse and nearby manufacturing plant to ensure it was secure, especially out of hours.
“By installing an up-to-date security system we could immediately save on our insurance,” says Peter Emery, site manager of Jacuzzi UK. “We estimate that these savings alone will pay for the system in two and a half years.”
Securing the site
The company also wanted a means by which to improve its processes and have a record of exactly what was loaded onto lorries.
Adam Electronic Security Systems was chosen to handle the project after offering an affordable solution that had the flexibility to handle Jacuzzi UK’s dual requirements. They suggested using a combination of Vista PowerDome cameras (VPD-6WP-P-C) and Genie domes (VRCD-5351) around the buildings.
The Vista domes have a 26:1 optical zoom and the newly designed cast aluminium pendent housing provides IP66 protection ensuring it is dust tight and protected against any water ingress. The Genie domes offer Digital Noise Reduction (DNR) and have three axis camera positioning.
Places to hide
“The site is surrounded by trees and shrubbery which could give potential trespassers a place to hide,” says Emery. “The combination of CCTV technology along with our on-site security guards gives us the most effective protection possible.”
Security guards are on-site 24/7 and use the cameras to help them most effectively tour the site. Jacuzzi UK is also part of the newly formed ‘Euroway Business Watch Scheme’ which shares information to promote better security across the whole of the industrial park.
As the PowerDomes are compatible with all Vista protocols, Adam Electronic Security Services Ltd was able to connect them into the Vista matrix system in the control room. The matrix has 32 inputs and eight outputs and allows for telemetry control of the domes via the Vista keyboards.
Matthew Smith, managing director of Adam Electronic, saw the control solution as a mix of coaxial FSK control and RS485 twisted pair cable. “The Vista matrix and PowerDome range is very flexible and allows for both twisted pair and coax cable to be used, so we used a combination of both depending on the cable in question,” he says.
Inside the loading area, Genie domes were used again because of their image quality, even in the often low light conditions they were positioned in, Smith says.
A loaded question
Vista PowerDomes have been installed internally and externally around the loading areas to monitor goods being loaded onto the trucks of customers and third party haulers.
“By filming everything that is loaded we can very easily and quickly check the quantities that have been loaded,” says Emery. If there is an issue and the customer believes that the wrong quantity has been delivered, the footage can be reviewed to see exactly what was loaded, at what time and on which date. “The system encourages accuracy from our staff and customers, saving a lot of time and money in the long run.”
“It made sense to continue using the PowerDomes internally,” says Smith. “Using the same range makes maintenance easier as it enables us to carry less spare parts.” A combination of swan and wall-mountings were utilised to ensure that they were effectively positioned for the clearest view.
“We’ve been using Norbain as our supplier for many years and have always been impressed with their speed of response and technical knowledge,” Smith says.
The cameras can also be used for health and safety reasons. Should an accident occur, Emery can look over the corresponding footage to determine what happened and how such accidents can be prevented in the future. “This wasn’t one of the reasons we initially had the kit installed,” he says. “We’ve found a number of additional uses for the kit and we still have room to expand and develop its usage in the future.”
