Tavcom Training said the courses, which will take place throughout 2019 and early 2020, were devised in response to growing demand.
The training provider, part of the Linx International Group, said it had received several requests from the security industry for training in how to mitigate against the threat of unmanned aerial systems – as drones are typically known in military contexts.
It was recently reported that Gatwick Airport spent £5m on counter-drone technology in the days following the Gatwick closure – a sum almost certainly dwarfed by revenue lost by the airport and airlines as a result of flights cancelled over safety fears. The cost of the chaos, which caused the cancellation of more than 1,000 flights, is expected to cost the aviation industry between £50-70m.
“The responses to the airport drone attacks were played out in the spotlight, with much public debate regarding the seeming lack of a pre-defined plan of action to prevent or contain such an incident,” said Sarah Hayward-Turton, sales and marketing director at the Linx International Group. “Last year we introduced our drone detection course and this year we will run it three times to give security professionals expert advice from experts in drone technology, to help mitigate risk and implement countermeasures to thwart unauthorised drone activity.”
The two-day drone detection course covers the following key topics:

- Drone detection and counter measures
- Understanding radio frequency (RF)
- Drone mitigation
- Tools available for jamming, radar ballistic and capture
- Practical demonstrations
The course will take place on the following dates:
- 13-14 March 2019
- 8-9 May 2019
- 5-6 November 2019
- 11-12 February 2020
The classroom course costs £375+VAT and results in a Tavcom certificate.
