10 year plan for fire and rescue service

[

A shared vision for the fire and rescue service has been published by the Local Government Association, in conjunction with the Chief Fire Officers’ Association and Communities and Local Government.

The report – which looks ahead to the next 10 years – sets out the context in which the fire and rescue service will develop. Areas to take into account include:

– demographic changes including their impact on vulnerable communities and on recruitment to the service

– security, resilience and environmental change, such as large-scale incidents as a result of terrorism or extreme weather

– increasing pressures for efficiency and value for money.

The document envisages fire and rescue services which: are community focussed; work seamlessly with other emergency services and partners; practice quality and diversity; deploy resources to match risks; and have constructive industrial relations.

“A remarkable fire service is one which performs, efficiently and effectively, helping people get safely through the day,” said Les Byrom, chairman of the LGA’s fire services management committee. “It must have a clear understanding of the people it serves and a clear focus on meeting their needs. By working together, the fire service, central and local government can provide a modern, economical service that prevents fires and saves lives.”
