Arson suspected in Manchester city centre blaze

[

The centre of Manchester suffered severe disruption after a fire broke

out on Monday night at the basement of a development undergoing

construction in the Ancoats area of the city.

Around 60 firefighters tackled the blaze at Sarah Village, and were still on the scene 24 hours later using breathing equipment and thermal imaging equipment to ensure that the fire was completely extinguished. There were no reports of any injuries.Part of the inner ring round around the city and one of the major routes into the city was closed for most of the day.

There were reports that furniture and fittings were being stored in the two-tier basement level, the building of which had largely been completed. Although the building is still too dangerous for fire investigators to enter, preliminary investigations point to arson.
