Christmas revellers caught up in city centre fires

[

Two major fires in Edinburgh last Friday night stretched firefighters on what was one of the busiest night for emergency services up and down the UK.

Hundreds of people celebrating the Christmas holidays were evacuated from part of the old city after a fire broke out soon after 8.00 pm at Khushi’s, an Indian restaurant in Victoria Street. Some 50 firefighters fought the blaze for around seven hours before it was brought under control, but not before the roof had collapsed. Two neighbouring venues and adjoining flats were also evacuated. There were no reported casualties.

Fire crews were still damping down the fire on Saturday and early assumptions are that the fire started and spread in cavities in the roof.

The second fire broke out at around 9.00pm at a basement under Rick’s Bar in Frederick Street. Around 30 firefighters attended that fire, and neighbouring flats were also evacuated.
