A new draft standard ‘BS 9999 Code of Practice for fire safety in the design, management and use of buildings’ is now available for public comment. The standard updates the draft for development BS DD 9999. Comments must be sent to BSI by 31st March 2008.
BS 9999 is designed as a co-ordinated package covering fire safety management, means of escape, the structural features of a building and escape routes, and access and facilities for firefighting. It updates the draft for development DD 9999, which itself introduced changes to the previous guidance in the BS 5588 series. One of the biggest changes is that travel time, rather than distance, now governs the design of means of escape. There are also a number of new features in the guidance on construction, and it introduces the concept of the risk profile.
While mainly aimed at designers, fire engineers and fire safety managers, it is also expected to be used by anyone involved in the design, construction, approvals or management of a building.
