Cumbria fire and rescue to join regional project

Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service will join a regional fire control project after the county authority was told to revisit its initial decision.

Cumbria County Council agreed to join the project in September but was asked to look at the decision again after Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service decided not to participate in the scheme. Those taking part are services in Lancashire, Cheshire and Cumbria.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service decided against the regional project and will to set up partnership with both Merseyside Police and North West Ambulance NHS Trust.

Cumbria County Council said Merseyside’s withdrawal will not affect the project’s viability and it is confident the move to a regional control centre will improve the county’s resilience and functionality.

Merseyside’s withdrawal will reduce the Cumbria County Council’s savings in 2014/15 by £2,000 (from £300,000 to £298,000) and in 2015/16 by £20,000 (from £290,000 to £270,000).
