Ex-tannery factory ‘a shell’ after blaze

A derelict tannery in Walsall that caught fire last week has been entirely gutted.

The building, which is set to be demolished, caught fire just after 2pm on 15 August.

It led to the town’s Arboretum and about 20 houses being evacuated.

The fire involved the basement, ground, first and second floors of the three-storey factory.

A spokesman from West Midlands Fire and Rescue Service said the building was now ‘a shell.’

Crews were dampening down until 7.44 pm the next day. The cause is under investigation.
