Almost 50,000 metres of Prysmian’s FP200 Gold and FP400 fire performance cables have been used at the four-storey IKEA store in Southampton. Co-incidentally, the store has been built on the site of the former cable factory for Pirelli, the original name for Prysmian.
Two contactors installed the cable, MHJ Electrical of Peterborough which installed over 45,000 metres of FP200 Gold cable to power the fire alarm and speaker systems, while Southampton based Rigfone Electrics were contracted to install the more than 3,000 meters of FP400 cable required for the smoke venting and extractor systems for the store.
Wayne Hind, project manager at MHJ Electrical explained that experience with the cable made it a welcome addition to the project. “Having used FP200 Gold before, I speak from experience when I say the cable is easy to strip off and terminate and has better quality sheathing than others. We installed white 2.5mm2 FP200 Gold cable in the dual use store speaker system and red 1.5mm2 for the fire alarm. The innovative speaker set-up gives daily information to shoppers and in the event of fire, depending on where you are in the building, tells you where to go to evacuate.”
