Fire risk halts business at Paris store

[

One of the most famous department stores in Paris – La Samaritaine – has been forced to close its doors after safety experts said the steel and glass building was a serious fire risk.

A large part of the art deco building, built in the early 20th Century, is still in its original state. Among the deficiencies found were flammable wooden flooring, dangerous electrical systems and inadequate fire extinguishing provision.

The store is expected to remain closed for at least 18 months, while an estimated Euro100 million of urgent renovation work is undertaken. The store’s owner, luxury goods company LVMH, has emphasised that the safety of its staff and customers is paramount. It is retaining its 750 employees on full pay, though only security and administrative staff will be expected to continue working during the closure.
