The Sussex Autistic Community has commissioned Fireco to undertake fire risk assessments of the group’s six accommodation centres. These included full surveys, carried out by Fireco’s fire safety consultants, supported by complete fire safety audit reports with recommendations.
The trust provides an occupational and living environment for young adults with autistic spectrum disorders. So its 24/7 care services present special challenges for risk management, where the need for individual freedom has to be measured against concerns for communal safety.
“The risks highlighted by these assessments have effectively assisted our strategies for management of fire safety, commented a spokesman for the trust. “Our care conditions can create a high dependency on staff, and these special circumstances have been addressed in the development of benchmark guidance for our emergency planning.”
