FireGrid project takes off

[

The three-year firegrid project got off the ground quite literally with the first experiment which involved analysing large-scale fires in a disused tower block in Glasgow.

Two flats were fully instrumented with Vesda, Precision and Proactiv fire systems from Vision Systems, and monitored with the company’s Adpro surveillance technology. In addition, numerous sensors had been installed by researchers from BRE and the University of Edinburgh.

“The use of our very early warning smoke detection systems, video security solutions and our advanced fire and security monitoring software allowed us to contribute an enormous amount of data to the project,” commented Peter Massingberd-Mundy of Vision Fire & Security.

Professor Jose Torero of the University of Edinburgh added: “The features of ADPRO’s Video Central Gold – particularly the live multi-camera screen and the ability to instantly review the video sequences – allowed us to immediately assess the progress and impact of the fires. Equally, the presentation of real time alarm information from each of the fire sensors on a floorplan of the building proved invaluable to the team and, of course, the smoke trend data collected from the VESDA detectors has provided some essential data for the FireGrid project.”

The experiments were filmed by Lion Television for BBC’s Horizon programme.
