The Association for Specialist Fire Protection (ASFP) has recently published an updated version of its ‘Fire Resisting Non-Load Bearing Partitions’ guide known as the Purple Book.
The publication is designed to be the definitive guide on proprietary materials and systems for constructing fire resisting partitions. It provides guidance on the safe provision of fire resistance with regard to the design, construction and maintenance of fire rated partitions in buildings.
The Purple Book currently relates to the fire resistance of individual partitions, rather than interfaced systems, with no interruptions in their function from items such as doors or glazing. In addition to the fire resistance of partitions based on their behaviour when subjected to a standard fire resistance test, the publication also covers reaction-to-fire (a property of individual products). The comprehensive document includes sections on: the definition of partitioning; the function of fire resisting partitioning; fire testing; Statutory Instruments; changes in fire safety legislation; components of fire resisting partitions; other factors affecting the design of fire rated partitions; appraisal principles; product certification and installer accreditation schemes; and European legislation.
