New fire safety code for buildings

[

A new code of practice for fire safety throughout the design, construction and use of a building is now available from BSI.

DD9999: 2005 covers the entire lifetime of a building – from design to demolition – giving recommendations and guidance on ways to maximise fire safety. It applies to both new and existing buildings and for the latter is especially relevant when alterations to the structure or use of premises are being considered.

The code lays particular emphasis on: construction; means of escape; access and facilities for fire fighting; and building management. It is aimed at a wide range of people including designers, building owners and fire safety managers, and also contains information that can be passed on to building occupiers.

Although the document aims to safeguard the lives of building occupiers and fire fighters, some of the guidance is also relevant to property protection.
