The Safety Letterbox Company has supplied fire rated mailboxes to the athlete’s village in the Olympic Park ahead of London 2012.

The London-based company installed 120 60-minute fire rated mailboxes in the Olympic Park in 8 high by 15 wide configurations.

The mailboxes satisfy the criteria of BS476 part 22 1987 clause 8, according to the manufacturers.

They work by using ‘strategically placed intumescent closures to starve a potential fire of oxygen.’

Intumescent substances swell when exposed to heat, increasing in volume and reducing the movement of air.

The boxes also have fire rated locks and come in three formats: the FR1 and 2 are designed for use indoors while the FR3 type are designed for through the wall use.

The mailboxes are vandal resistant, and produced from galvanised steel – they can be enhanced further with a finish that conforms to London Underground surface spread of flame requirements BS476 part 6 and 7.
