The appointment will be made by Her Majesty the Queen following a recommendation by the Home Secretary, Theresa May.
Before making this recommendation the Home Secretary will take into account any recommendation made to her by the MPA and any representations from Boris Johnson, the Mayor of London.

The Home Office and the MPA are jointly advertising for a new Commissioner to lead the Metropolitan Police Service, the biggest police force in the country with over 50,000 staff and a budget of over GB pound 3 billion.
With responsibilities for a national counter-terrorism role, policing London – the country’s biggest, most diverse city and its capital – and policing major events including the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics, the new Commissioner will ensure that Londoners, and people across the UK, can feel safe and confident that they are protected from crime and that their security is a priority.
The Commissioner is accountable to the Home Secretary and the MPA, and must answer to Londoners and the public nationally.
The successful candidate will oversee and guide the Metropolitan Police Service through a period of transition from the current governance arrangements to those proposed for London in the Police Reform and Social Responsibility Bill.
The successful candidate will have the duty of ensuring public confidence in police integrity, and will be responsible for maintaining and improving services to the public. The successful candidate will also demonstrate an outstanding track record in fighting crime, in managing change in policing functions and in building the public’s confidence in the service at all levels.
He or she will have proven leadership skills in operational policing, in working with partners and diverse communities and in managing resources in complex organisations. He or she will also be a key leader of policing nationally.
Applicants should be serving UK chief constables or of equivalent UK ranks or above, or have recent experience at these levels. Applicants must also be British citizens.
The appointment will be made by Her Majesty the Queen following a recommendation by the Home Secretary under the Police Act 1996.
Before making this recommendation, the Home Secretary will have regard to any recommendation made to her by the MPA and any representations from the Mayor of London. The successful applicant will be appointed in September 2011 at the latest. The appointment will be for a period of five years.
