The tune was originally recorded by Jamaican reggae star Junior Murvin – and written with original producer Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry. The Clash recorded their version in 1977, and it was included on their eponymous debut album.
It was an early example of punk groups incorporating reggae influences in their music – as described by Bob Marley in his ‘Punky Reggae Party’.
Does it require any real justification for its status as a Song About Security? Well, it literally is about police, and about thieves – so I think we can pass it on that level.
As a side note, I have had a couple of requests from particularly persuasive folks to include music videos that have a security theme, or prominently feature security equipment, even if the song itself doesn’t contain any kind of security theme (however obscure). And, I thought, as it’s a music video feature, I’m going to allow it.
So if you’ve got a song or a music video idea, leave a message letting me know why it should be used, and I’ll probably include it at some stage in future.
Hoorah.
