India’s CCTNS Project to cover 15,000 police stations

The Crime and Criminal Tracking Network Systems (CCTNS) Project has been launched recently under it nearly 15015 police stations and 7000 higher offices including circles, districts, sub-divisions, state headquarters, etc. throughout the country have been proposed to be automated.

The CCTNS Scheme is to be implemented on a mission mode with the following objectives:

The government proposes to connect the police stations through a comprehensive network using various modes like state area wide network, virtual private network over broadband (VPNoBB), multi protocol label switching virtual private network (MPLS VPN), worldwide interoperability for microwave access (WiMax)/very small aperture terminal (VSAT) as per feasibility.

Under CCTNS Project, 2.5 lakh police personnel of states/UTs have been trained so far in basic IT awareness. The process is still continuing. The training on CCTNS software will commence after its roll out in states/UTs in the last week of December 2011. Under the project, capacity building (infrastructure) is also being created by way of setting up/ strengthening of police training colleges, regional training colleges, district training colleges for imparting training to police personnel.
