In recent months, installers have expressed reservations about the range of contacts available, their operating tolerance and the various colour codes used for flying leads.
“It was felt that these concerns were leading to limited take up for grade 3 contacts amongst installers,” said BSIA technical and membership services director Alex Carmichael.
“The talks between BSIA installers and manufacturers have resolved these issues and BSIA manufacturers have committed to making a number of changes within the next six months.”
Following talks with installers, BSIA manufacturers made a commitment to:
– Establish and institute a common colour-code for contacts and resistor values
– Look at increasing the operating tolerance of contacts to at least 15-20mm
– Introduce additional flush contacts
– Increase the range of types of contacts
– Provide clear installation instructions
– Assist in providing a structured training programme for installers
Carmichael said these pledges should help make the installation of grade 3 contacts simpler and, as a consequence, increase the uptake of the technology.
