Big brands to reveal how they protect lone workers

Speakers from major brands and organisations such as Orange, Virgin Media, ACPO and the Suzy Lamplugh Trust will share details of their lone worker protection solutions as part of a new education programme at IFSEC International 2012.

Paula Gunnell of Orange’s EverythingEverywhere will chair a session looking at a mobile operator’s perspective of the lone worker market , while the Virgin Media session will focus on the way a lone worker solution can be implemented to enable a safety and security culture which is not compromised by rapid corporate growth.

These form just part of the inaugural IFSEC International Lone Worker Protection Theatre programme, a free education feature which offers visitors the opportunity to learn about the latest developments in this sector from some of the biggest brands in British business.

IFSEC International event director Charlie Cracknell said: “With ever increasing numbers of lone workers it is crucial that employers have an effective system in place for the protection of their staff. Managing risks in the workplace is a duty of care issue.”

Another presentation will address the police response to lone worker systems. It will look at ACPO guidelines to police forces on how to classify and respond to type A and type B alarms in the context of a lone worker situation.

Further presentations will look at how alarm receiving centres play an important role in lone worker solutions; looking after workers when travelling abroad and the importance of rugged communications for lone workers.

Craig Swallow from Connexion2 will cover engaging with international partners while Ian Johannessen from Peoplesafe will lead the session which asks whether the security industry helps or hinders the lone worker market. The British Security Industry Association’s director Alex Carmichael will discuss BS 8484 and the BSIA Lone Worker Group.

Barry Holt, director of policy and research at the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management, will look at the identification, evaluation and control of risks to lone workers both in remote environments and home visiting.

And the very notion of ‘lone worker protection’ is up for debate in the Centre Stage feature on the 16 May, when consultant and former NHS nurse Malcolm Cheshire will argue that ‘device-based’ protection does not offer protection, and that the only effective form of protection is traditional close protection. Debating with him will be Patrick Dealtry, MD of Lone Working Group Ltd.

In addition to the education programme, IFSEC International will see the debut of the Find out more on the lone worker feature area at IFSEC International 2012, sponsored by Connexion2, which will showcase a wide range of services, products and solutions for lone workers.

IFSEC International 2012 takes place on 14-17 May at the NEC Birmingham and is co-located with Safety & Health Expo and Facilities Show.
