Tens of thousands of young people will enter the security industry via apprenticeships in the coming years, according to plans unveiled by the founder of 100 in 100 Apprenticeships.

Speaking at this year’s IFSEC Security Excellence Awards Simon Banks, also group MD of CSL Dualcom, said the initiative had already seen more than 2,000 young people forge a career in the industry over the last three years.

Meanwhile, Andrew McCullough and Darrell Gilmour from Kings Security won first prize – £1,000 courtesy of competition co-sponsor CSL Dualcom – in the Engineers of Tomorrow UK Apprentice Skills Competition.

Second place and £500 worth of Red Letter days (thanks to sponsors NSI) went to Joshua Griggs-Burton from CIA and Daniel Winearls from Micro-Vision. The third place winners of a £250 cash prize (supplied by sponsors SSAIB) were Harrison Cooke and Nathan Lyles, also from Kings.

The Engineers of Tomorrow Group will have a 500 square metre stand at IFSEC International in June, attend NSI Summits and regularly engage with the National Apprenticeship Service.

A short video featuring Kings Security, which has employed 50 apprentices this year at their purpose-built training academy, was debuted at the event.

The REC Youth Employment guide estimates that there will be a skills gap deficit of 45,500 level 3 apprentices in the UK by 2020. Taking on an apprentice, according to the Engineers of Tomorrow Group, helps both replenish the industry’s talent pool and energise businesses with new skill sets like IT and social media expertise.
