The Association of Security Consultants (ASC) endeavours, amongst other things, to encourage the development of ideas for the advancement of security risk management as a discipline.
In that endeavour, the ASC presents an annual prize – The Imbert Prize – named after a hugely popular ASC patron, Lord Imbert of New Romney CVO QPM JP.
During his active professional career, Lord Imbert held lengthy terms of office as commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Service and, latterly, Lord Lieutenant of Greater London. To this day, he remains a prominent and active figure in the security, policing and risk arena.
The ASC has pleasure in announcing the finalists for The Imbert Prize 2012. As always, the award is split into separate elements.
The Academic Dissertation Award
An award of GB pound 1,000 is bestowed for a selected dissertation submitted by an academic institution. Each year, Cranfield, Leicester, Loughborough and Portsmouth Universities are invited to submit a dissertation on behalf of one of their students, the content of which must be relevant to consultancy in security.
These dissertations are judged by an Awards Panel appointed by the ASC Board.
In 2012, the nominations for this category are:
- Cranfield University – dissertation by Stewart McCartney entitled ‘Individual Jihad: examining Al-Qaeda’s lone actor strategy and security responses[
- Leicester University – dissertation by Graham Smaul entitled: ‘An examination of the risk management and business continuity management policies and procedures at Dublin Airport, Ireland’
- Loughborough University – dissertation by Edward Gregory Hirst entitled: ‘Security functions are often guilty of underselling themselves – is this true? If so, how can security be promoted effectively?’
- Portsmouth University – dissertation by John Afolabi Akerele entitled: ‘Nigerian aviation security post-Abdulmutallab (‘The Christmas Bomber’)
The Notable Person Award
This accolade is presented on the basis of the person considered to have made the most notable contribution to the security world in the preceding year. The leading security associations/organisations/bodies are invited to submit a nomination for adjudication by the Awards Panel.
The 2012 nominations for this category are as follows:
- ASIS (American Society of Industrial Security) Nominee: Allison Wylde
- BSIA (British Security Industry Association) Nominee: Bobby Logue
- IPSA (International Professional Security Association) Nominee: Una Riley
- SyI (The Security Institute) Nominee: Emma Shaw
The winners of each category will be announced at the ASC’s Annual Awards Luncheon, which is to be held at the Royal Air Force Club, Piccadilly, London on Thursday 21 June. Lord Imbert himself will present the trophies.
