50 firefighters fight massive dye factory blaze that guts building

A dye factory in the Scottish Borders has been left gutted after its roof collapsed in a large-scale fire last week.

Around 50 firefighters fought the blaze at Bridgehaugh industrial unit in South Bridge Street, Selkirk.
Fire broke out at 2.50am and was tackled mainly from outside due to fears about structural safety.

At around 4am the roof collapsed and internal walls gave way due to the ferocity of the blaze, Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service reported.

The building has now been completely gutted and it is expected to be demolished.

Firefighters were still at the scene  later that morning (19 May) dealing with the incident and liaising with the local council, scientific adviser and the Scottish Environment Protection Agency over environmental factors resulting from the wide range of mixed chemicals in the building and the volume of water used to fight the fire.

A spokeswoman for Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service said:

“The fire is now under control although there will be hot spots in the building and crews are expected to be at the scene for several hours. A number of mixed chemicals for dyeing were involved in the fire and as a result, we sought advice from scientific advisors about how best to manage those issues.

“Fortunately there was no one in the building at the time of the fire and no reported injuries.”
