ASIS helps managers plan for change

The ASIS Foundation’s just-released report ‘Planning for Change: Security Managers’ Perspectives on Future Demographic, Crime and Technology Trends’ analyses future demographic, crime and technology trends in the United States before summarising how experts anticipate these changes will influence security over the next five-to-ten years. In addition, the report offers practical recommendations as to how security managers can adopt now to address these anticipated trends.

The ASIS Foundation contracted the Urban Institute – a non-profit, non-partisan social policy and economic research organisation – to forecast demographic and crime trends, and to provide guidance for the emerging security challenges that may arise from such predictions.

In the 50-page report there are predictions that, like the UK, the US security industry will face many challenges, including an ageing workforce, an increasingly diverse population and a growth in high-tech crimes.

The report is divided into three sections by key topic areas: demographic challenges, crime trends and technology. The final section addresses issues that surfaced during a series of roundtable discussions with dozens of security industry experts representing the banking, healthcare, hospitality, information technology, insurance, retail and transportation sectors.

While this publication is tailored to security managers, it will also be useful to a wide array of personnel, including public-sector employees and law enforcement agents.

The ASIS Foundation – a 501(c)(3) charitable organisation – provides funding and manages endowments for academic, strategic and professional development activities. Support for the Foundation is achieved through financial contributions from individuals, chapters and companies with an interest in the security industry.

Fundamentally, the Foundation advances industry education and research by developing academic programmes, producing special industry reports and research, recognising security-related advancements and achievements, managing endowments for chapters and regions and encouraging continuing education.

Nominations for the European Award

ASIS International has also announced that it’s accepting nominations for the 2009 European Award for Distinguished Contributions to Societal Security.

It’s the European security profession’s most prestigious recognition of contributions to societal security, awarded to high visibility candidates from the public and private sectors (including senior public officials, politicians and corporate leaders).

The recipient must be an individual or group highly regarded in Europe for having made a significant contribution to security. Nominations may be submitted by any individual, groups or associations and may include self-nominations. The nominator must submit a written narrative detailing the nominee’s contributions deserving of recognition, and outlining why the nominee makes a worthy recipient.

All nominations must be received by the ASIS International European Bureau in Brussels before 15 January 2009. More information regarding the nomination process can be found at www.asisonline.eu (click on the link on the right hand panel of this page).

European Security Conference
