Axis cameras help cut theft at school

Witchford Village College, which teaches 900 students aged 11 to 16, now has a total of 28 network cameras placed in IT suites, key corridors and the library.

The cameras were installed by Ely Telecom – an approved contractor of Education ICT, which provides IT support for all schools in Cambridge.

The two companies also worked together to reduce the risk of break-ins and to improve security on reception during working hours.

Since the IP surveillance system was completed in August, the school has not experienced any theft or vandalism.

Jeremy Simmonds, IT manager at the school, said, “Now that the new network video system is installed it is much easier and quicker to reach images if we do need to review any incidents.

“We find the high image quality ensures that we can positively identify individuals concerned and email relevant video images if required to the authorities.”

The system is made up of Axis 211 and Axis 207 network cameras linked to a four-terabyte server, which provides space for 14 days’ storage of network video images.

Images can be monitored on two PCs using Axis’ Camera Station software. The school’s site manager and two other authorised users are able to access the images. All three can view footage from the school’s cameras on any PC, provided they use the correct user name and password.

The school, which already has an analogue system covering its exterior, is considering deploying Axis video servers to bring all of the footage together on the same network.

“Witchford Village College, like many schools throughout the UK, is now able to compare the benefits of IP surveillance alongside traditional standalone CCTV systems,” said Steve Gorski, managing director of Axis in the UK.

“By looking at our network cameras’ output, users can clearly see the improved image quality, as well as the ease of storage and data movement, as compared with the older CCTV-based technologies.”
