BSI revises upholstery standards

[

BSI has just revised two upholstery ignitability standards, one relating to beds and mattresses (BS 6807), the other to upholstered seats (BS 5852).

BS 6807:2006 describes methods for assessing the ignitability of mattresses, upholstered divans and upholstered bed bases when subjected to flaming types of primary and secondary ignition sources of differing severity.

This is a full revision of the standard, and as such supersedes BS 6807:1996, which is now withdrawn. The principal change is a clarification of progressive smouldering ignition; minor editorial changes have also been made.

BS 5852:2006 is the new test method for assessing the ignitability of upholstered seating by smouldering and flaming ignition sources

The objective of this standard is to measure the ignitability of upholstered furniture composites and/or complete pieces of furniture. The principal changes from the 1990 edition are updated references, to bring the standard into line with BS 6807 and BS EN 1021, and to incorporate the existing amendments.

This supersedes the 1990 issue of the standard, which is withdrawn. However, since the Furniture and Furnishings (Fire Safety) Regulations 1988 refer to the earlier editions of the standard, neither BS 5852-1:1979 nor BS 5852-2:1982 are withdrawn.
