The truth of the matter is that people are the lifeblood of our industry regardless of which security element happens to be under consideration. Without the scientists and technicians, we wouldn’t engender innovation. Similarly, without the skilled installers who fit security systems we would not be in a position to provide a professional and reliable service to the customer.
As a Board member at Skills for Security, and as the serving chairman of the BSIA’s Security Systems Section, I have a passion for enhancing training in our industry, and for ensuring that we can not only attract enthusiastic youngsters to come and work in the security sector, but also afford them a rewarding and fulfilling career.
There are several essential elements that must be in place if this goal is to be achieved. First, it’s important young people are always given a positive impression of what a career as a security systems installer will bring them. The myriad transferable skills that installers possess must be explained.
Second, it’s vital installation companies continue to invest in apprenticeship schemes. Traditionally, they have proven effective at yielding the best qualities from young students of the discipline.
Finally, we must continue to invest in our people throughout their careers. It’s not enough to say that we’ve provided basic training and, as such, the job is done. To eke out peoples’ best qualities, and for clients to reap the benefits, regular training is a ‘must’.
The BSIA’s Annual Apprentice Installer Awards demonstrate the dedication and talent being attracted to the industry. That talent must be harnessed and retained.
