CCTV overhaul at world’s biggest oil terminal

The German video security firm said it will be supplying an ‘extremely resilient’ camera network to secure the outer perimeter of the vast terminal in Ras Tanura, in the Persian Gulf.

Owned by oil giant Saudi Aramco, the terminal includes a refinery and a port with artificial islands that allow tankers to dock in the deep water.

The 25 km-long perimeter is being fitted with a high-security, high-redundancy surveillance system designed to “survive the unexpected”. Fears of a terrorist incident at the terminal have been raised in the past, with one expert warning that a successful attack would have the power to destabilise the Western economy.

Installed by STESA, the system incorporates ‘dormant’ cameras that take over the work of failed units within two seconds, which Geutebruck hopes will offer a continuous, intelligently-filtered security overview of the whole site.
