The measures proposed will build on the work which has been in progress since before the attack on Glasgow International Airport. In terms of guidance to building designers, architects, developers and those companies responsible for securing and safeguarding crowded public spaces, the measures to be taken accord entirely with both our own thinking and the advice we have been offering our clients worldwide since the early 1990s.
We are delighted that the British Government is now continuing to build on the work carried out by the Centre for the Protection of National Infrastructure and its commercial partners in producing safe and secure environments for the public without having to compromise on either appearance or functionality.
The new requirement for local authorities to assess their protection measures against terrorism will be an interesting challenge. We look forward to seeing the framework against which they will perform the assessment.
Other measures aimed at enhancing security in and around vital sites and facilities are sensible and timely and, when sensitively applied, will increase protection levels without adversely affecting either the quality of the public space or the experience of the users of that space.
Ultimately, the security challenge for us all remains to engineer effective security and safety for the public without any unwanted and/or unnecessary degradation of quality of either the environment or the experience. In the UK, we are world leaders in this discipline.
We look forward to working closely with our colleagues in Government and the commercial sectors to achieve our aims.
