A new residential fire door safety mechanism, which allows easy access while maintaining fire integrity, has been unveiled by Royde and Tucker.
SmoClo is said to be an easily installed, fail-safe device that enables residential fire doors to be normally swing free, only closing the door in the event of a fire. Once triggered by the smoke detection system, the unit keeps the door closed while remaining manually operable, until the fire alarm is deactivated.
Most residential fire doors are designed to continuously self-close, often resulting in doors being habitually forced or wedged open. The product is aimed at residential buildings such as apartments and sheltered accommodation, or anywhere standard sprung closers are sited.
Integrated into the head of the doorframe, SmoClo is suitable for standard door widths and heights and leaf weights up to 50kg. It has also been tested and passed BS EN 1634 and is suitable for 30 minute fire doors.
