Diamond coat keeps fingerprint readers working

Traditionally, fingerprint scanning areas of the device have been made of relatively fragile silicon metal or plastic.

This also makes them susceptible to scratches and environmental damage.

Now a specialist is offering a diamond-like coating that repels dirt.

The Diamonex DLC coating has some of the unique properties of a diamond.

The amorphous carbon material gives wear resistance and hydrophobic qualities to the scanner. It has a slick, smooth feel that reduces friction and repels dirt.

Supplier, Morgan Technical Ceramics says it “significantly extends the life” of a scanner without sacrificing its precision.

It means manufacturers will be able to offer more reliable fingerprint scanning products with a longer life span.

The company says as biometric scanners become more popular, particularly in tougher environments, damage to the sensor devices is becoming a problem.

“Wear and tear and environmental abuse is growing” says Richard Hobbs, general manager.

The US company offers the coating on products shipped to their premises or can supply coated systems.
