European Biometrics Centre opens in Brussels

The centre is designed to showcase a range of identity management solutions, including e-ID card and passport technology and advanced biometric identification techniques, such as 3D facial, electronic iris and fingerprint recognition.

Unisys customers will be able to test the latest biometrics solutions, as well as liaise with the company’s technology consultants to develop customised solutions. The company has been at the forefront of global biometrics installations, including the introduction of multi-purpose ID cards and the development of border control solutions, for more than ten years. Thanks to the new centre, European customers can benefit directly from this expertise for the first time.

The opening of the centre comes at the same time that a global Unisys study confirms widespread European public acceptance of biometrics as an identification and verification tool. The research suggests that 69% of the European general public now accept the use of biometrics, with prime benefits identified as a speedier verification process and increased convenience.

Roberto Tavano, the company’s vice-president of European programmes for the global public sector, said: “The need to combat fraud and ID theft is particularly high on government and business agendas. This is not only due to the risk of financial losses but also to maintain secure business operations, along with customers’ confidence and trust in the organisation. Biometrics technology offers the potential for reliable and secure identification to address these issues and the Unisys Centre of Excellence provides an interactive environment to illustrate potential solutions in real-life scenarios.”
