Forensics master class for Surrey Police

Over 80 detectives will attend a series of lectures at Surrey Police headquarters in Guildford delivered by specialists from the University of Portsmouth’s Institute of Criminal Justice Studies (ICJS) together with biologists and cyber crime experts.

The intensive one-day event will educate detectives about developments in forensics and the interpretation of forensic evidence, and will cover the very latest advances in DNA and document analysis, forensic entomology and cyber crime.

Superintendent Neil Boon is head of the Surrey Police Training and Development Centre, which holds the unique status of being an Associate Department of the University’s ICJS. Boon told info4security: “An understanding of forensics is becoming more important in modern-day policing, and the partnership with the University of Portsmouth means we have a wealth of expertise on tap. We very much hope this will be the beginning of a rolling programme to educate our officers.”

Professor Steve Savage from the ICJS added: “This event pulls together expertise from a strong community of specialists within the ICJS, Biological Sciences and the School of Computing which makes up the University’s Forensics Forum. Together, we can deliver multi-disciplinary training to those in the field of criminal justice.”

The master class for Surrey Police is a pilot for future commercial ventures which will see the University of Portsmouth deliver training to police services across the country, and which may eventually be offered to legal firms.
