Over two thirds of those taking part in the YouGov survey said they would be prepared to splash out on top of the range alarm systems with a direct link to their local police station to keep their property safe from burglars.
CCTV also factored high on homeowners’ wish lists, with 52 per cent of respondents considering a system that overlooks doors, windows and perimeters.
Results showed the public’s fear of intrusion is so great, that a third would like to live in a gated community. But this comes at a price, according to estate agent Hamptons International, and could add 25 per cent to the cost of a property.
The popularity of other, less expensive, home security measured varied wildly. Over half of those surveyed said they would invest in motion-activated security lights, but just 20 per cent admitted they would be prepared to install bars across their windows and doors.
Managers at mortgage lender Alliance and Leicester said that although the simplest methods can prove most effective in deterring burglars, homeowners who want greater peace of mind are prepared to spend more on security.
“By spending around GB pound 8,500, the majority of homes could have a level of security that would deter many would-be burglars,” said Richard Al-Dabbagh, a senior personal loans manager.
“Although CCTV and alarm systems may not stop a house being targeted, they both present a very visible deterrent, even to the experienced and expert burglar.
“Burglary is an opportunist crime for the most part,” he added.
