Hundreds pay tribute to Devon firefighter

Hundreds of people – including around 80 colleagues – have paid tribute to firefighter Lee McCaffrey at his funeral service.

On Monday, a vintage 1936 ‘wheeled escape’ fire engine led the funeral cortege with Lee’s coffin draped in the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service standard.

At the funeral service in Plympton, family, friends and colleagues paid tribute to Lee, who had served with the fire service for eight years and was a member of Greenbank Fire Station’s White watch.

Lee died on 30 August when his motorbike collided with the central reservation on a flyover.

Station manager Clive Bartlett said: “Lee’s life was tragically cut short at 41 years old and our thoughts are with his family, friends and close colleagues. He was an extremely popular firefighter, well liked by all his colleagues, a pleasure to know and is sadly missed. Lee joined the Service in 2003 and was an asset to the stations he served at, the watches he served with, and to the service for the eight years he was with us.”
