I4S video: Education at IFSEC 2012 – Sharon Williams (Morgans Hotel Group)

Sharon Williams’ career in security and law enforcement began in 1988 with a three-year stint as a police constable with the Metropolitan Police Service. From there, Williams went on to become a community beat officer and also focused on neighbourhood liaison before moving into crime prevention roles (spending a year on secondment to the Home Office to serve as trainer at the Crime Reduction College).

Williams’ first foray into private sector security saw this Chartered Security Professional and Fellow of The Security Institute take on the role of head of security and safety for The American School in January 2002. This post entailed both operational and strategic responsibilities.

In her present role as regional safety and security director across the Morgans Hotel Group’s London establishments, Williams has developed still further her considerable experience of security management while encompassing risk assessment, crisis management, crime reduction, Health and Safety and expertise in handling emergency procedures.

Key areas affecting the security sector

At IFSEC International 2012, Sharon will be speaking in the Security Management Education Theatre between 3.30 pm and 4.30 pm on Wednesday 16 May. This segment of conference offers a whistle-stop tour of some of the key areas affecting the security sector just now, among them organisational resilience, crime prevention and the CSO and the Board.

In this exclusive video interview, Sharon talks about ways in which the role of the security manager has altered in recent times, how professionals can achieve buy-in from both their members of staff and the Board of Directors in terms of planning and execution of the security operation and also advises on how security managers and directors might impact positively on the host organisation’s bottom line.

Also, Sharon offers her considered opinions on the future for security personnel here in the UK and what’s required – and expected – of a modern day security team leader.

About Morgans Hotel Group in London

The opening of St Martins Lane in London in late 1999 represented Morgans Hotel Group’s first foray across the Atlantic. Received with great fanfare and both critical and customer acclaim, St Martins Lane is an “utterly original urban hotel” that takes the Morgans Hotel Group concept of ‘Hotel as Theatre’ to a new level, providing its guests with a singularly magical, exciting and visceral experience.

In fact, this hotel is predicated on the idea that, today, luxury is about new experiences and “making a connection with something truly special”.

Situated in Covent Garden, the hotel has joined forces with London’s ubiquitous GymBox to provide guests with a most unique workout experience with its state-of-the-art cardio and resistance equipment, Olympic-sized boxing rings, huge ‘hammer-strength’ free weights sections, spin rooms, nightly resident DJs and laser-lit dance studios.

As a follow-up to St Martins Lane, Morgans Hotel Group opened Sanderson in London’s stylish Soho district in 2000. This first of its kind ‘Urban Spa’ is a landmark property with a spectacularly landscaped interior courtyard that opens to the sky and is surrounded by guestrooms. The property combines modern and classic elements to create a “one-of-a-kind oasis and refuge” in the middle of bustling London.
