IP technology: new guides from BSIA

Cost-effective security is best achieved by ensuring that different security elements work together to create an holistic approach, extracting the most potential from systems such as CCTV surveillance cameras, access control equipment and intruder alarms.

One of the few ways to achieve integration is by adopting Internet Protocol (IP)-based technology that allows these systems to ‘talk’ to each other and maximise efficiencies.

Effective communication mechanism

“IP has already proven to be an effective communication method for alarm systems, access control and CCTV systems,” said Alex Carmichael, the British Security Industry Association’s (BSIA) technical director. “This has provided added value functionality through greater network use as a result of deploying networks for other services, such as facilities management systems.”

Carmichael continued: “IP offers the end user another choice in the type of communication method used. This means that when the user requirements are assessed by the consultant or security installer, the right type of communication medium will be chosen in line with the specific risk.”

User and installer guides to IP

In view of these advancements, the BSIA has developed two guides to provide advice on the use of IP technology in the security industry.

The BSIA User Guide provides basic advice on what IP is, how it can be used effectively within a security system and the benefits which might be realised from the innovative deployment of IP.

The User Guide also covers considerations such as infrastructure and Internet Service Providers, the capabilities of IP solutions in security applications, how an IP network might be integrated with existing security solutions, cost and a number of different – but equally relevant – security considerations.

As the generation of ‘digital’ systems is seeing a trend towards IP in all applications, security installers are now being asked to provide IP solutions which require an understanding of IT. The BSIA’s Installer Guide provides a basic comprehension of IP in security-related applications, while also offering salient advice on design and installation considerations.

With a more technical focus, the Installer Guide includes comprehensive information on different network types and the assigning of IP addresses to devices in order to pass information between network-attached devices (hosts). The guide also considers the types of transmission systems available.

The new guides form part of a series of BSIA publications on the subject of IP security to aid end users, IT managers and installers. They can be downloaded here.
