IP video gives a better view at aviation research centre

The NIAR undertakes research, development, testing and certification to advance technologies for aviation and other industries. The system uses Milestone Systems open platform IP video management software with Axis network cameras at the Institute’s 12,000 ft2 aircraft structural testing and evaluation centre. The video system helps increase visibility for researchers and provides remote access during tests, as well as saving on night staffing needs and improving staff safety.

Milestone XProtect Enterprise IP video management software controls Axis 213 network ptz cameras and 210A fixed network cameras strategically installed throughout the test hangar. Remote access also allows staff from other locations to access images, as well as enabling researchers to view them from home. The images can also be exported for test reporting purposes.

“The primary purpose of the IP video surveillance at NIAR is to monitor the aviation tests,” said Larry Braden, senior research engineer at NIAR. “The secondary goal is to make the surveillance remotely available to customers worldwide, which saves them the expense of sending people to watch the tests.

“The Milestone-Axis IP video surveillance solution is a 300% improvement on the visual monitoring capabilities in our work. It can also be dangerous for the operators when they are looking at windshields or fuselage under pressure, so instead of risking injury to people in such situations, we now can safely look at it on the video system.”
