The report from research analysts Frost and Sullivan claims that security is a “key factor that needs a thorough audit” as traffic grows exponentially over IP networks. While the capacity of networks has long been the focus of concern, the report now draws attention to the threat posed by worms, viruses and spam.
Focussing largely on Voice over IP, the report goes on to state that in migrating there is the latent risk of hackers accessing corporate communications, disrupting them and even withdrawing valuable information.
Further advice is offered to those considering the big move, with training and preparation high on the priority list. The report seems keen to highlight the resistance to change which “will always be present, and should not be overlooked”, particularly with regard to end-users. Traditional technology makes staff feel comfortable, says the report, and preparing them for the change is the best way to ensure investments are realised.
The report suggests that, “ultimately, migrating to an IP-based solution requires analysis and preparation at many levels, for any company, no matter the size or type of business.”
It concludes, “It is advisable to carry out internal research of the expected benefits and the costs associated with the migration, and then cross check with the vendor in order to set realistic expectations in terms of not just of money, but with regard to productivity and time saving gains.”
