Reports of this development have been billed as yet another way by which the Government might collect personal information and track personal communications – serving to fuel further consumer mistrust of identity assurance and credential management initiatives.
That said, intelligently deployed and well-managed smart card programmes using a proven identity assurance and credential management platform actually protect both individuals and businesses from unauthorised access to personal information, in turn reducing the risk of identity fraud.
Indeed, the mobile phone itself is likely to be the weakest link in the security chain if it’s left behind in a cab or stolen from a coat pocket in the pub.
