New BT home monitoring system

BT Homesafe uses a home broadband connection to send users (and five contacts of their choice) alert messages when an alarm is triggered.

The system can be set up to automatically send text messages and e-mails to the owner if there is a problem at home.

A silent panic alarm facility can also be programmed to send messages to a list of contacts if the homeowner feels vulnerable but does not want to be heard when making a phone call.

Because the system uses always-on broadband, no call charges are incurred when it sends data out to the monitoring service. Homeowners can manage the system from anywhere in the world, providing they have internet access.

BT Homesafe is also compatible with wireless IP cameras and a maximum of four can be added to provide real-time surveillance of the home. These can be instructed to automatically capture images if an event occurs and images are then stored for viewing online or on a mobile phone.

A recent pilot scheme, which saw BT working with internet monitoring and control specialist Intamac Systems, covered 1,500 homes in the UK.

Kevin Meagher, CEO of Intamac Systems said, “The trial has been very successful in helping us to refine the product and service.

“We believe this technology will become standard in all homes.”

The system is available to homeowners through Intamac at GB pound 219.99. A monitoring fee – payable monthly – also applies.
