New European smoke alarm standard

[

BSI has published the European standard EN 14604:2005. This supersedes BS 5446-1:2000, which is to be withdrawn on 31 July 2008.

The new standard specifies the requirements, test methods, performance criteria and manufacturer’s instructions for smoke alarms using scattered light, transmitted light or ionisation. It is specifically intended for household or similar residential applications, and it also includes additional requirements for smoke alarms for leisure accommodation vehicles.

The standard should only be used as guidance for testing other types of smoke alarms. In addition, it does not cover smoke alarms with special features, such as separate control and indicating equipment.
