New insurers’ guide to building construction

[

New guidance designed to give building specifiers enhanced information on protecting their buildings from fires and satisfying insurer requirements beyond Building Regulations has been published by the Fire Protection Association and the Royal Institute of British Architects.

Essentially an enhanced and annotated version of Approved Document B: (Fire Safety) Volume 2, the guide offers architects, engineers and surveyors extra insurer-backed technical guidance on protecting commercial buildings from fire beyond critical life safety measures. For the first time, the guidance follows the format of Approved Document B with additional annotations, tables and diagrams to cover property protection and business interruption issues.

Chris Hanks, chairman of insurer-backed organisation, RISC Authority (formerly InFiReS), said: We hope this new approach will ensure the design community has an improved understanding of the principles of property protection, and by embracing these requirements, considerably improve community risk management and reduce the cost of fire to their clients and the UK economy.”

Approved Document B: Fire Safety (Volume 2) Buildings Other Than Dwellinghouses Incorporating Insurers’ Requirements for Property Protection is available from RIBA Bookshops.
