Teaming up with conflict management specialists Maybo, Skills for Security hope to provide a trainer programme that has been both legally and medically reviewed.
Bill Fox of Maybo said,
“The new SIA and ACPO endorsed guidance publication on physical intervention, and recent case law, demonstrates that where physical intervention is foreseeable staff need to be taught legitimate and safe methods. The dilemma for employers has been where to source credible training in an area of significant risk.
“Maybo is delighted to be working alongside Skills for Security in the launch of a flexible accredited training solution that has undergone thorough medical review and meets the needs of security professionals in different roles. To further demonstrate our commitment to this relationship we are supporting the Skills for Security conferences in November as a main sponsor. “
The SAFERwork Physical Intervention course sees would-be trainers attending five-days of development where they are taught to deliver the programme to the Maybo standard.
Newly-qualified tutors can then apply to Maybo for a licence to deliver the programme to their employees. With this, and subject to insurance, they can also train client delegates in a commercial capacity.
Once licensed, approval centres can buy delegate registrations through Maybo’s online management system. These include delegate workbooks, a training record card, the delegate registration fee and Skills for Security accredited certification.
The end-user courses last between one and two days.
Stefan Hay, Director of Business Development and Communication at Skills for Security said:
“Conflict management training now forms a key part of staff training and, of course, the SIA’s Licence to Practise criteria, yet until now there has been little clarity, or consistency, in the area of physical intervention.
“The reality is that many security operatives, those for example deployed in the retail sector, are now required to use physical intervention. The problem is many of them have not received guidance and training in safe methods and recent case law has shown that this leaves staff, service users and employers at risk of harm, prosecution and substantial compensation claims. We believe that SAFERwork will bridge the skills gap and provide the confidence and reassurance security personnel need to carry out their duties safely.”
