Aico says its Firecap fire protection covers for downlights have been awarded NHBC Certification for both fire protection and sound protection applications, after being independently examined and found to satisfy the requirements of the Building Regulations 2000 (Amendment) (No.3) Regulations 2004 for England and Wales.
Aico claims that Firecap is the first product of its type to be awarded NHBC Certification. In addition, it has already gained LANTAC certification for both fire protection and sound protection applications.
The Firecap FF109 fire protection cover is designed to restore the fire rating and acoustic integrity of a ceiling after a hole is cut in it to install recessed downlighters. It can be fitted into place in seconds, with no need for screws, drilling or additional sealants. It can be retrofitted as well as fitted during building.
Officially rated to offer 60 minutes protection ‘unloaded’ tests to BS476 part 23: 1987 conducted by the Building Research Establishment and Chiltern International Fire showed that Firecap achieved 72 minutes fire and heat protection.
“We are delighted that Firecap is the first fire protection cover to receive NHBC Certification for both fire and acoustic protection applications, said Neil Perdell, technical services manager at Aico. “With the increased use of recessed lighting and downlighters in modern house design, Firecap can be relied upon not only to protect the property from the increased fire hazard potentially caused by these designs, but also help to eliminate the associated ‘transmission of sound’ which could prove very expensive to put right otherwise.”
