Over 100 people are believed to have been killed after a petrol pipeline explosion and fire in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi.
The Kenya Pipeline Company said the explosion, which happened on Monday 12 September, was caused by an over-pressurised pipeline. The pipeline runs through the densely populated Sinai slum area between Nairobi’s city centre and the airport.
Petrol inside leaked out into a sewer and the river running through a slum. Media reports suggest the blast may have been sparked by a cigarette butt being thrown into an open sewer that was filling with fuel.
Residents waded through the sewage-filled river in search of more bodies.
