Police trap thieves with CCTV and tracking systems

The unmarked vehicles are rigged with up to eight of VIT’s evidential quality covert cameras and then parked in crime hotspots as bait.

Once a break-in occurs, the strategically placed cameras capture the offender’s face – allowing them to be identified and brought to justice.

“The quality of the footage obtained from the vehicles is so clear, even in complete darkness, that the police can easily secure a prosecution against the thief,” a VIT spokesperson said.

Items likely to be stolen from the trap vehicles are also bugged with tracking devices, giving police the thief’s exact whereabouts immediately after the break-in.

VIT’s night vision-enabled surveillance system is capable of recording at 25 fps, 24 hours a day, and the system’s batteries can record for up to five days without interruption.

Specially-designed “Autocontrast Adjusting Technology” lets the cameras provide evidential images from inside the vehicles in daylight and at night, even in complete darkness. Footage is recorded onto an on-board hot-swappable hard drive and the system can also send images remotely to the police to help them with their investigations.

Since January last year, over 70 arrests have been made due to the use of VIT video and tracking systems.
